Ancient Rome - 2 Major Groups of Governing - Free Essay Example
In Rome there was 2 major groups of governing. These 2 groups over Rome was the Republic and the Kings. The Republic seemed to be the better governing power over Rome. During the time of kings in Rome theres was several of them. There was seven kings that ruled Rome from 753-510 B.C. After Rome was under rule by a Republic form of government in 509 B.C. Rome quickly transitioned from the rule of kings to the more democratic government of a Republic. The Gauls destroyed much of Romes records in 390 B.C. The stories of the Roman kings were a mix of legend and facts. Romulus who was the first king helped Rome. He increased the population and expanded the borders of Rome. He also established the Roman Senate. Romulus wasnt a great person either though. The king encouraged going to the neighboring village and raping the women to increase the supply of wives and population. Another king was Tullus Hostilius. He was mostly focused on war and attacked neighboring villages until the plague hit Rome. Ancus Marcius was Tullus Hostilius successor. He was more peaceful yet still conquered tribes near by. The most successful king was Tarquinius Priscus. He was the first of the tyrannical rule of the Etruscans. Pricus built a sewage system and an arena for people to gather to watch events. The last king was not anything more than a murder. Lucius Tarquinius was a brutal leader who declared himself as the supreme judge of Rome. He murdered people, raped women, and seized property for himself. To end the rule from kings the Romans created different rules. The Romans would use 2 different consoles and a dictator that would rule for no more than six months. The dictator was only used during military emergencies. The senate had a lot of power, but was in charge and can advise of all the people of Rome. They had a lot of power because of the collective prestiges of its members. The Romans also created 2 assemblies which was the Tribal Assembly and the Centuriate. The tribal assembly would vote on many different things. Including, on the legislatures and the magistrates. They also served as a court for public offense or crimes. The Centuriate was in charge of the military. They would vote on different thoughts on war and peace. The Romans then did something that was unheard of. In 451 B.C. they created their first set of written laws and rules. This was called the Twelve Tables. The tables were on display. The tables mostly showed the rights that citizens have. The creation of the Twelve tables led to the Roman Republic growing and creating architecture and culture. Rome went through some hard times. During 753 and 264 B.C. there was a huge transition. During these times Rome created a complete successful city. There was a lot of suffering from one king to the next, but in the end it became all worth it. Adopting and creating this form of government and roles is what allowed Rome to prosper. This is one of the first times everyone was treated equally and had a love for where they live. This is what led Rome to success. The creation of the Republic set down stepping stones for other countries to follow and create their homes just like this.
